Ely Heritage Day
Visit Oliver Cromwell’s House, Ely Museum & Ely Cathedral.
MORNING
ELY STATION
Hop on a Hereward Line train to Ely (Greater Anglia, CrossCountry Trains and East Midlands Railway all stop at Ely) and take the short walk from the railway station towards Cherry Hill Park.
If you fancy a few minutes rest, then you could take advantage of one of the park benches for a sit while you admire the spectacle that is Ely Cathedral, locally known as “The Ship of the Fens”.
OLIVER CROMWELL'S HOUSE
Continue your walk a further 5-minutes up to the Gallery and along the front of the Cathedral walking across Palace Green. Just beyond here, you will find Oliver Cromwell’s House.
You can choose to either take your own tour around the house, or make use of the headsets which offer an audio guide and give a greater insight into the house and its history.
A small gift shop is available for any purchases you may wish to make.
For details of ticketing options (a combined ticket is available and includes admission to Ely Museum), visit the website.
LUNCH
You can either choose to sit a while on Palace Green and admire the spectacle of the Cathedral whilst you enjoy your own picnic, or you can take advantage of one of the many cafes, restaurants, and other eateries which are all on offer within a few minutes’ walk. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the array of options – there’s something for everybody’s taste!
AFTERNOON
ELY MUSEUM
Head back to Ely Museum to explore the heritage of Ely and the surrounding fens, from the prehistoric creatures who swam in the ancient oceans to Ely today.
Find out about the ways of life from the wide wetlands to the rich farmland and how the unusual landscape has shaped the lives of the people who lived here. Built on an island of solid land surrounded by marshes, discover the development of Ely from a monastic foundation to a market town.
Check out the website for details of opening times and exhibits and special events.

After your Museum visit, you could choose to round off your day with a visit to the spectacular Ely Cathedral (which is also home to The Stained-Glass Museum).
Standing tall over the “pocket City” of Ely and offering worship and sanctity to thousands of pilgrims and visitors every year, the Cathedral is a special place. You can choose to wander around at your own pace or take advantage of one of the many tour options, including The Octagon Tower or West Tower Experiences for those who are not afraid of heights!
