Hereward CRP completes its busiest Rail Safety Week programme, including it’s largest Try a Train trip to date

The week included Community Rail events in Newark, a school trip for 210 children and a railway safety trip for a Beaver Scouts colony

The Hereward CRP completed its busiest week of programmes which coincided with Rail Safety Week.

Community Rail day events were held at Newark Northgate and Newark Castle stations working in partnership with colleagues at East Midlands Railway and LNER.
During the morning, representatives from The National Civil War Museum in Newark came along, in period costume, to support the event and promote the centre.

A visit also took place with Year 6 pupils from Mount CofE School in Newark, and pupils participated in a railway safety visit with quiz.

Later in the week, the CRP, working with Burrowmoor School in March,  supported a whole school trip to Nene Park Ferry Meadows in Peterborough.
The CRP managed to organise for all Key Stage 2 pupils (approximately 210 children) to travel either to or from Peterborough by train, before travelling onwards to Ferry Meadows by coach to enjoy a fun day of games and being outdoors. Three train operators services were used for the journey going to Peterborough and two for the return leg.
Of the 210 pupils, 56 had never been on a train before, so it was a great trip to be able to support!

The final event of the week was a railway safety trip from Whittlesea to Ely, which was taken by youngsters from the Beaver Scout colony in Thorney. They enjoyed travelling by train and exploring Ely railway station, learning about the hazards around the station as well as looking at the safety features. After completing a safety quiz, the Beavers headed off to the park to play and picnic. The final stop of the day was for ice creams by the river, before the journey back home! The day ended with all of the young people learning how to use the level crossing safely.

Funding for the CRP’s Try a Train project came from CrossCountry Trains and East Midlands Railway’s Community Development and engagement funds and we are extremely thankful to them for their support which enables us to provide this experience for such large numbers of young people.
