At Whittlesea station, volunteer station adopters Geoff Howes, Andrew Hill and Peter Anderson recently secured a Wildlife Friendly Station accreditation following an assessment by an ecologist.
Despite the station’s relatively small green space, the report praised its biodiversity value, noting the mix of scrub, grassland and flowering plants that support local wildlife.
The station’s colourful planters and troughs are filled with carefully selected flowers and herbs that provide food and habitat for pollinating insects throughout the year, while also creating an attractive and welcoming environment for passengers.
Supported by the Hereward Community Rail Partnership, the project demonstrates how even smaller station spaces can make a meaningful contribution to nature recovery.
