Whittlesey Heritage Walk & Lattersey Nature reserve
Most famously known for its “Straw Bear”, Whittlesey (or Whittlesea, if you are at the station!) is a small market town which offers an array of beautiful architecture, heritage and culture.
MORNING
WHITTLESEA STATION
Take a Hereward Line train to Whittlesey and while at the station, why not download the Love Exploring App. This will ensure you can access the Whittlesey Heritage Walk, which you can join from Station Road.
There are a choice of route options, with a shorter and longer walk, both of which take in the stunning architecture and points of interest in this pretty market town.
LATTERSEY NATURE RESERVE
Download the Hereward CRP’s mini maps, one of which takes you from the railway station to Lattersey Nature Reserve.
Here you can either wander at your leisure or, if you have the Love Exploring App, you can encourage your younger people to spot the fairies and dinosaurs along the way, depending on the time of year!
LUNCH
You can either take advantage of the peace and quiet of Lattersey if you have bought your own picnic, or walk back into town and take your pick from the choice of eateries, ranging from cafes, restaurants and pubs to takeaways.
AFTERNOON
HERITAGE WALK TRAIL
You can either choose to complete the longer Whittlesey Heritage Walk trail if you completed the shorter walk in the morning or, if you’re feeling really energetic and need to walk off your lunch, you could choose to take the walk from Whittlesey into Peterborough, following the Green Wheel Route / NCN Route 63.
This walk is around 5.7 miles, and so if this is too long to return walking, you can choose to head to the railway station in Peterborough and hop on a Hereward Line train, taking the short 8-minute journey back to your destination station of Whittlesea.
